2017 Honda CR-V Driving

Drivers hear a lot of things: this car is the highest-performing, that one is the safest. But how do Methuen drivers see through those announcements to determine whether a car is actually worth buying? You come to Commonwealth Motors, where we make things easy. Today we’re making sense of the Top Safety Pick+ designation, awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to vehicles with advanced protection features like the Honda CR-V safety features and the advanced Nissan Rogue safety tech. So, without further ado, what is a Top Safety Pick+?

What We Talk About When We Talk About Top Safety Pick+

The IIHS is non-profit organization that was founded by auto-insurers over fifty years ago with the aim of educating consumers and others about the safety of new vehicles on the market. Like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it does this by conducting crash tests and determining the crashworthiness of a given vehicle. It then publicizes its research and provides vehicles with safety ratings based on its findings. To qualify for the Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must earn a “Good”—the IIHS’s highest rating—in five crashworthiness tests:

  • A small overlap front test

  • A moderate overlap front test

  • A roof strength test

  • A head restraint test

  • And a side test

Additionally, it must receive an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. However, to earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating, a vehicle must have first earned a Top Safety Pick rating, and it must also have advanced or superior ratings of frontal crash prevenetion and acceptable or good headlight ratings. The Top Safety Pick+ is the IIHS’s highest rating: when the IIHS gives a car this rating, it means that they have concluded that this car is one of safest in its size category.
